The SFC notes an announcement dated 27 April 2004 and made by China Life Insurance Company Limited concerning an informal inquiry by the US Securities and Exchange Commission on the company. The SFC has today received media enquiries whether the SFC is conducting an investigation into China Life. The SFC considers that it would be desirable to make the following statements in order to maintain and promote confidence in the Hong Kong securities and futures industry:

• The SFC confirms that it is making inquiries into the circumstances of the listing of China Life.

• The SFC confirms that it is assisting the US SEC in its inquiry.
