People
and the Community
People are the primary target audience for any CSR effort;
they are the ultimate beneficiary of any programme that promotes
well-being and quality of life. By “people,” we
refer to two audiences – our own employees and the people
of Hong Kong in different social segments. People are the
greatest asset for any organisation as well as any community.
Here we work from inside out, offering a congenial and safe
operating environment for employees while extending the same
caring attitude towards the larger community, from which we
draw human resources to operate.
Rationale Our
people drive the success of our organisation. Hence, our policies
must show that we are committed to our people for their well-being,
their safety, their personal growth and their advancement.
Similarly, since our people belong to the bigger community
from which we also generate revenue and within which we operate,
it is appropriate that we also give something back. As a statutory
body and a conscientious corporate citizen, we have an obligation
to be socially aware. We must meet that responsibility by
showing that we care as an organisation and by encouraging
our employees to engage productively with the community.
Statement Commitment
is about engagement. As a caring organisation, we are engaged
on two fronts – with our employees and with the broader
community. Where our own employees are concerned, we show
that we care by providing them with a safe, congenial, yet
stimulating working environment, opportunities for advancement,
equitable treatment and encouragement for work-life balance.
Where the community is concerned, we fulfil our obligations
as a corporate citizen by appropriately interacting with the
public or specific segments of the population as an organisation
while encouraging our employees to contribute their time,
expertise, efforts and money to support community causes ranging
from charitable acts to civic activities.
Principles
Employee Care
We communicate clearly to our employees the SFC’s mission
and core values so that they develop a true sense of belonging.
Our employees are our best ambassadors, spreading goodwill
by word of mouth and projecting a positive image by their
action. Our policy for employee care promotes:
- a balance between work and leisure;
- team spirit and closer two-way communication between the
various working levels and management;
- grooming from the bottom for a long-term career; and
- employee involvement in the external community.
Community Care
As a rule of thumb, we strive to maintain recognition as a
Caring Organisation every year. While not prescriptive, when
reaching out to the community we keep in mind the following
principles:
- a two-prong approach of: 1) initiating action as a single
organisation and 2) supporting staff in their volunteer
work;
- a greater sense of belonging (in the external community)
among staff with outreach programmes;
- donations of time, expertise and goodwill rather than
in cash as an organisation and donations by employees of
cash as well as in kind;
- targeting broad cross-sections of the community rather
than specific under-privileged segments;
- achieving more than one objective with each outreach programme,
such as promoting a civic cause while supporting environmental
protection;
- linking up with other organisations, including professional
associations and volunteer groups, to organise outreach
programmes; and
- recognising staff for their community-care contributions
with nominations and awards.
Stakeholder Care
We care for stakeholders (industry participants, business
associates and suppliers) by showing them respect and courtesy
in different ways, depending on the audience:
- For industry participants, we show our care by seeking
their views from time to time to stay close to the market
and their needs.
- For business associates and suppliers, we offer a level
playing field and competitive fees when considering bids
for business.
- In all our interactions with the external community,
we strive to demonstrate our professionalism and commitment
to public service.
